NEWSLETTER
JUNE 2009
It has been another successful year in St Patrick’s and at the start of this newsletter I’d like to say a few “Thank-You’s”
First of all to the Board of Management, under the Chairmanship of Canon Neill, for guiding the school forwards. The school is blessed to have such dedicated and talented Board members who give so freely of their time and talents. Secondly, thanks to the P.T.A. committee and their Chairperson, Becky O’Connor, for the enormous amount of work they do for the children and the school in general. Over 20% of the families in the school are represented on the committee. And finally, thanks to all the teaching staff, who make the school what it is. The children are being educated in a happy and caring environment and I’d like to pay tribute to my colleagues for their outstanding role in this.
THE LION KING
On Friday 19th June at 7.30pm in St Patrick’s Church, our production of the Lion King will be performed. It will be a show not to be missed! Every pupil in the school has a part to play. Rehearsals are on-going under the direction of Becky O’Connor.
Parental participation has been wonderful; from helping with mask making, to sewing costumes, to painting scenery, to assisting with rehearsals.
WORKSHOPS
The children have experienced super dance classes under the expert guidance of Robert Connor from Dance Theatre of Ireland and a superb drumming workshop from Peter McCrann. Both events were funded by the P.T.A.
THE GARDA BAND
On June 3rd, the Garda band performed for the children in the Rectory grounds. On a beautiful sunny morning they entertained and educated all present. Thanks to Marie Fahy for using her influence to arrange this.
The children had been asked to bring €2 (or more if possible) so that we can support the Music Therapy Unit in the national rehabilitation Hospital.
If you haven’t made a donation, there is still time!
SWIMMING
Swimming will continue in St Augustine’s pool next school year. Thanks to Audrey Sherlock & Sarah Glynn for their continued expert teaching. 1st & 2nd will begin their first session on Wednesday, 2nd September .
SPORTS DAY
Tuesday 23rd June, in Cuala sports ground. Zuilmah Wallis & Trevor King have again volunteered to co-ordinate the events.
It is hoped that the fun will commence at 9.30am
OUTREACH
As part of the school Outreach programme, 5th & 6th sold homemade jewellery and fun balloons at the annual Parish Fete in May. They managed to raise €203 which is a credit to them. Half the proceeds went to the parish and the other half to funding the education of children in an orphange in Kenya. Believe it or not, €200 pays for a child’s tuition fees for a year.
Enormous thanks is due to Kathleen MacDonald and Deirdre McDonagh who provided the materials for the jewellery and taught the children how to construct their pieces.
The sum of €1,124.58 was raised for the Irish Heart Foundation as a result of the children’s efforts to get sponsors for their skipping.
Well done to all who participated.
SUBSCRIPTION
Thanks to all who have paid this subscription to the treasurer. If you haven’t as yet paid your full amount, perhaps you could do so before 26th June.
REPORTS
Please send in a stamped addressed envelope to facilitate the posting of end of year reports.
One envelope per family will suffice.
SCIENCE GALLERY
Professor Luke O’Neill kindly invited 5th & 6th into Trinity College to visit his exhibition on 28th May. Luke and his team gave the children a great insight into germs and their presence on earth. Thanks also to Dr. Margaret Worrall (his other half!) who did some ground work in the classroom before the visit.
TESCO VOUCHERS
If anybody has Tesco vouchers would they please give them to Ms Crooke by Friday 12th June, at the latest.
Turas Scoile ~ Rang 1 & Rang 2
Our outing took place on Thursday may 14th to Kilmaihamwood, Kells, Co Meath. On our arrival we were greeted by an enthusiastic group of leaders, who quickly sorted the children into two groups – The Rockets & Team Lions. The object was to collect as many crystals as possible through participating in three different activities – The Crystal Maze, A Mountain Hike and an Orienteering Course. Despite the normal ‘Irish weather’!!, the children rose to the challenges and really enjoyed the day out. Team Lions won a beautiful ‘crystal’ vase. This venue is certainly worth a visit. (Ms Crooke)
3rd and 4th headed off to Galway on Wednesday 27th May to visit the Volvo Ocean Race! It was a fantastic day, and the rain was very kind as it never got heavier than a drizzle! Luckily the goody bag contained a rain poncho! The class were guided around the race village, met and questioned bowman Justin Slattery, experienced terrible sea conditions in a race simulator and viewed all boats in the competition.
They also gave a healthy roar (across the marina) to the crew of the Green Dragon, and in return the crew waved back to them! The class then broke the record for eating chips, chicken and sausages chased by ice-cream! It was a super experience for us all, and many thanks are extended to the parents who came along on the 12 hour trip! Photos will be available on the school website soon… (Ms Galbraith)
DRAMA
At the Stagecraft Youth Poetry Festival held in Cabinteely Community School on Saturday 28th March, three pupils from St Patrick’s were awarded prizes.
Bethan O’Driscoll and Jessica McDonagh were first and second respectively in the 5th class competition. Hannah Maharry was awarded first place in the 6th class contest.
Well done to all three of you and to all who competed.
Thanks to Sara Walsh who prepared the children for the competition.
